Deep cleaning vs regular cleaning: what’s the difference?

“Cleaning” can mean very different things. Understanding the difference between regular and deep cleaning helps you book the right service — and avoid paying for more (or less) than you need.

What is regular cleaning?

Regular cleaning — sometimes called maintenance cleaning — keeps a home or office tidy and hygienic week to week. It focuses on the surfaces you use every day:

  • Kitchen counters, sink and appliance exteriors
  • Toilets, basins, showers and mirrors
  • Dusting reachable furniture and surfaces
  • Vacuuming and mopping floors
  • Emptying bins

What is deep cleaning?

A deep clean goes further, reaching areas that routine cleaning doesn’t. It includes detailed scrubbing, cleaning behind and under movable appliances and furniture, descaling bathrooms, degreasing the kitchen, and cleaning frames, skirting, vents and tracks where dust builds up.

Side by side

  • Purpose: regular cleaning maintains; deep cleaning resets.
  • Frequency: regular cleaning is weekly or bi-weekly; deep cleaning is typically a few times a year.
  • Time: a deep clean takes considerably longer and often needs a larger crew.
  • Detail: deep cleaning covers grout, limescale, grease and hidden areas.

When do you need a deep clean?

  • Before moving into a new home, or after moving out
  • After renovation or building work
  • When a property hasn’t been cleaned thoroughly for a while
  • As a seasonal refresh — for example after the summer or before Ramadan and Eid
  • Before starting a regular cleaning schedule, so routine visits maintain a clean baseline

The best approach: combine both

Most homes and offices get the best results from an initial deep clean followed by regular cleaning, with another deep clean every few months. Businesses can build both into a single cleaning contract.
