Cleaning mistakes you didn’t know you were making

Cleaning harder isn’t always cleaning better. Some everyday habits spread dirt around, damage surfaces or simply waste effort. Here are the most common mistakes our team sees — and what to do instead.
1. Cleaning bottom to top
Wiping counters and then dusting shelves above them means dust falls onto surfaces you’ve just cleaned. Always work from high to low, and finish with the floor.
2. Spraying cleaner straight onto surfaces
Spraying directly onto screens, electronics, wood or stone can leave streaks, seep into gaps or damage finishes. Spray onto a microfibre cloth instead, then wipe.
3. Not giving products time to work
Disinfectants and degreasers usually need contact time. Spraying and wiping immediately removes the product before it has done its job. Check the label for the recommended time.
4. Using one cloth for everything
Using the same cloth in the bathroom and kitchen moves bacteria from one room to another. Use separate, colour-coded cloths for each area and wash them hot after use.
5. Mopping with dirty water
If the water in your bucket is grey, you’re spreading dirt rather than removing it. Change the water often, and vacuum or sweep first so the mop isn’t pushing sand around.
6. Mixing cleaning products
Never mix different cleaning chemicals — particularly bleach with ammonia or acidic products. Some combinations release harmful fumes. Use one product at a time and rinse between them.
7. Using the wrong product on natural stone
Marble and many natural stones common in Oman’s homes are sensitive to acids such as vinegar and lemon. Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for stone.
8. Forgetting the places dust hides
AC vent covers, sliding-door tracks, skirting boards and the tops of cupboards collect a lot of fine dust in our climate. Add them to your monthly list — or book a periodic deep clean to reset everything.
