Safer cleaning for homes with children and pets

Children and pets spend a lot of time on floors and touching surfaces — so how you clean matters as much as how often. A few simple changes can keep your home hygienic while reducing unnecessary chemical exposure.
Use the mildest product that does the job
Everyday dirt on most surfaces can be handled with warm water, a microfibre cloth and a mild detergent. Save stronger disinfectants for where they’re genuinely needed — toilets, bins and raw-meat preparation areas — and always follow the label.
Choose fragrance-free where possible
Strong fragrances can irritate sensitive noses and airways. Unscented or lightly scented products are a gentler choice for bedrooms and play areas.
Ventilate while you clean
Open windows or run extractor fans when using cleaning products, and keep children and pets out of the room until surfaces are dry.
Rinse surfaces children touch
After disinfecting high-chair trays, play tables or floors where babies crawl, rinse with clean water if the product label recommends it, and let surfaces dry fully.
Store products safely
- Keep all cleaning products in their original, labelled containers.
- Store them high up or in a locked cupboard — never under the sink within reach.
- Never decant products into drink bottles.
- Never mix products; some combinations release harmful fumes.
Keep pet areas clean
Wash pet bedding and bowls regularly, vacuum pet hair from sofas and rugs, and clean up accidents promptly with a product suitable for the surface. Periodic upholstery and carpet cleaning help remove hair, dander and odours.
Tell your cleaning company
If you use a cleaning service, tell them about children, pets and any allergies or sensitivities. Our crews choose products suited to your surfaces and can use gentler options on request.
