The ultimate house cleaning checklist: a room-by-room guide

A clean home is easier to keep when you know exactly what needs doing and how often. This checklist breaks the job down room by room, with daily, weekly and monthly tasks that suit homes in Oman — where fine dust, heat and humidity make some jobs more important than in other climates.
Before you start: work top to bottom
Whatever the room, clean from high to low and from dry to wet. Dust ceiling fans, shelves and AC vent covers first, then wipe surfaces, and finish with floors. That way, dust you disturb ends up on a surface you haven’t cleaned yet — not one you’ve just finished.
Kitchen
- Daily: wipe counters and the hob, wash dishes, clean the sink, empty the bin.
- Weekly: degrease splashbacks and cabinet handles, wipe appliance exteriors, mop the floor, clean the microwave.
- Monthly: clean inside the fridge, wipe cabinet fronts, descale the kettle and taps, check under the sink for leaks or pests.
Grease and crumbs attract pests quickly in warm weather, so the kitchen is the room where small daily habits make the biggest difference.
Bathrooms
- Daily: squeegee shower screens, wipe the basin and tap.
- Weekly: clean the toilet, shower, tub and tiles; wash bath mats; clean mirrors.
- Monthly: descale showerheads and taps, scrub grout lines, clean extractor fan covers.
Hard water leaves limescale on glass and fittings. Wiping surfaces dry after use is the simplest way to prevent build-up.
Living room and majlis
- Daily: tidy, plump cushions, clear surfaces.
- Weekly: dust furniture and electronics, vacuum sofas and rugs, mop hard floors.
- Monthly: vacuum under furniture, dust light fittings and AC vents, clean window sills and sliding-door tracks.
Bedrooms
- Daily: make the bed, put clothes away.
- Weekly: change bed linen, dust surfaces, vacuum or mop floors.
- Monthly: vacuum the mattress, wash pillows or duvets as their labels allow, clean wardrobe shelves.
Entrances, balconies and windows
Sand and dust enter through doors and windows, so these areas need regular attention. Sweep entrances and balconies weekly, place a good mat at every door, and clean window tracks monthly — or straight after a dusty day.
When to call in professionals
Even with a good routine, most homes benefit from a periodic deep clean that reaches behind appliances, descales bathrooms and degreases the kitchen thoroughly. If keeping up with the weekly list is taking too much of your time, a regular house cleaning service can handle it for you.
