Before you start

Clean after the furniture has gone, not before. Furniture hides floors, skirting and wall marks, and dust shows once rooms are empty. Re-read your tenancy agreement for any handover requirements, and take dated photos of every room before you leave. Kitchen: the area checked most closely

• Oven, hob, extractor hood and filters.
• Fridge and freezer: empty, defrost, wipe and dry with doors open.
• Cupboards and drawers, inside and out.
• Sink, taps and the tiles behind the cooker.

Bathrooms and bedrooms

Remove limescale from showers and taps, and clean mirrors, drains, tiles and toilets. In bedrooms wipe the inside of wardrobes, window sills, skirting boards, air-conditioning vents and ceiling fans. These are places where dust is easy to spot during inspection.

Carpets and floors

If the property has carpet or rugs, stains often show once furniture is removed. Consider carpet and sofa cleaning before handover. Hard floors should be dry-swept or vacuumed first and then mopped, to avoid turning dust into streaks.

Windows, sliding doors and tracks

Muscat dust and sea air collect on glass and in the lower tracks of sliding doors. Clean the tracks with a small brush, wipe frames and then the glass. For high or large panes, book window cleaning. If the whole property needs more than a standard clean, a full deep cleaning is the right choice.

Balconies and outside areas

Do not forget the balcony, storeroom, parking space and maid’s room if you have them. Remove dust and bird droppings and wash the floors. Check the water tank or garden area only if they are part of your responsibility under the contract.

Final walk-through

• Switch lights on in every room and check for marks on walls and switches.
• Check inside every cupboard and drawer.
• Take out all rubbish and leave no personal items.
• Photograph each room after cleaning.
